Caroline Mortimer

Caroline Mortimer, born Caroline Dimont on 12 March 1942, was a distinguished British actress whose career spanned several decades in both television and film. She was the daughter of the renowned novelist Penelope Mortimer from her first marriage to the journalist Charles Dimont, making her the stepdaughter of the celebrated playwright Sir John Mortimer. Growing up in such a literary household undoubtedly influenced her artistic sensibilities, and she went on to train at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where she honed her craft as a performer. Her television career began to flourish in the mid-1960s, with notable appearances in productions such as A Little Temptation (1965), where she co-starred alongside Denholm Elliott and Barbara Jefford, and Intrigue (1966), an industrial espionage series in which she portrayed Val, the hero's assistant and girlfriend. Throughout the late 1960s, Mortimer continued to build her television portfolio with roles in The Saint episode The Organisation Man in 1968, as well as appearances in Menace and Spy Trap. One of her most memorable television performances came in 1974 when she played Alice Vavasor in six episodes of the critically acclaimed series The Pallisers. Her versatility as an actress was further demonstrated through her work in series such as Space: 1999, The Cleopatras (1983), Within These Walls, and Rumpole of the Bailey, where she appeared in the 1988 episode Rumpole and the Bubble Reputation. She also appeared as Emily Murray in an episode of the 1991 BBC television series The House of Eliott. In addition to her television work, Mortimer had a notable film career, with roles in Saturday Night Out (1964), A Place for Lovers (1968), The McKenzie Break (1970), The Hireling (1973), and Juggernaut (1974), the latter being a tense thriller in which she played Susan McLeod. In her personal life, Mortimer had a relationship with the married actor Leslie Phillips during the 1960s, before marrying the actor John Bennett in 1979; together they had two sons, one of whom sadly predeceased her. Her husband John Bennett passed away in April 2005. Caroline Mortimer died in September 2020 at the age of 78, leaving behind a rich legacy of performances that showcased her remarkable range and dedication to the craft of acting.
