Burt Bacharach

Burt Freeman Bacharach (May 12, 1928 – February 8, 2023) was an American composer, songwriter, record producer and pianist whose work reshaped twentieth‑century popular music. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, and raised in Forest Hills, Queens, he displayed an early fascination with jazz, sneaking into 52nd Street nightclubs with a forged ID to hear bebop legends such as Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. After studies at McGill University, the Mannes School of Music and the Music Academy of the West, he served in the U.S. Army where he accompanied officers in Germany, an experience that honed his arranging skills. In the mid‑1950s Bacharach began a prolific partnership with lyricist Hal David; together they penned hits like “The Story of My Life” for Marty Robbins and “Magic Moments” for Perry Como, securing the first back‑to‑back No. 1 singles in the United Kingdom. Their collaboration reached its apex in the 1960s with Dionne Warwick, producing classics such as “Walk On By,” “I Say a Little Prayer,” and “Alfie,” while also crafting film songs like “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head,” which earned an Academy Award. Over his six‑decade career Bacharach wrote more than fifty‑two U.S. Top 40 hits, won six Grammys, three Oscars and an Emmy, and was honored with the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize in 2012. He continued to experiment, collaborating with artists ranging from Elvis Costello to Daniel Tashian, and even appeared as himself in the Austin Powers films, introducing his sophisticated chord progressions to new generations.
