Brian Reece

Brian Reece (24 July 1913 – 12 April 1962) was a versatile English actor whose career spanned radio, film, and the West End stage during the post‑war era. Born in Wallasey, Cheshire, he entered the entertainment world in the late 1940s, first gaining public attention with a starring role as the eponymous policeman in the popular BBC radio series PC 49, a character that would anchor his fame for more than a decade. His distinctive voice and natural comedic timing made him a fixture on British airwaves, and he was invited twice to appear on the legendary programme Desert Island Discs, first on his birthday in 1953 and again in April 1961, where he shared personal anecdotes and musical favorites that revealed a thoughtful, introspective side behind his on‑stage bravado. Reece’s film work, though less extensive than his radio output, demonstrated his adaptability; he appeared in A Case for PC 49 (1951), a cinematic extension of the radio hit, as well as in Orders Are Orders (1954), Geordie (1955) and the slap‑stick comedy Carry On Admiral (1957). On the theatrical stage he earned critical praise in productions such as Bless The Bride (1947) and the lively farce Bet Your Life (1952), sharing the bill with Julie Wilson and Arthur Askey, and later in John Dighton’s Man Alive! at the Aldwych Theatre in 1955. Between 1948 and 1953 he resided at No. 59 Strand‑on‑the‑Green in West London, a period during which he occasionally worshipped at St Anne’s Church, Kew; a pew cushion there bears his name, albeit with incorrect dates. His untimely death in London on 12 April 1962, at the age of forty‑eight, cut short a vibrant career, but his contributions to mid‑century British broadcasting and theatre remain remembered by enthusiasts of classic radio drama and post‑war West End productions.
