What's After the Movie
Brian David Henson is an American puppeteer, filmmaker, and the chairman of The Jim Henson Company, best known for extending his father Jim Henson's legendary legacy. Born on November 3, 1963 in New York City, he grew up surrounded by the creative energy of the original Muppet workshops and appeared as a child in early PBS segments of Sesame Street. As a teenager he built the first Muppet penguin puppet for The Muppet Show and, at 17, helped engineer a special rigging device for The Great Muppet Caper that allowed the Muppets to ride bicycles, showcasing his early talent for combining performance with engineering. Throughout the 1980s he contributed to landmark films such as Return to Oz (as Jack Pumpkinhead), Santa Claus: The Movie (special effects), and the iconic Audrey II puppet in Little Shop of Horrors, while also voicing Hoggle in the cult classic Labyrinth. His work on The Muppets Take Manhattan demonstrated his expertise in complex marionette effects, cementing his reputation as a versatile practitioner of both performance and technical craft. Transitioning to directing, Henson helmed The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) and Muppet Treasure Island (1996), followed by a starring role as Dr. Phil van Neuter in Muppets from Space (1999). In recent years he expanded into adult‑oriented puppetry, directing and producing the edgy comedy The Happytime Murders (2018) and co‑creating the variety show Puppet Up! while also serving as head judge on Jim Henson's Creature Shop Challenge. His television executive‑producer credits include Dinosaurs, Farscape, Bear in the Big Blue House, and The Hoobs, illustrating a broad impact across family and sci‑fi programming. On a personal note, Brian married costume designer Ellis Flyte in 1990 (divorced 2002) and later actress Mia Sara in 2010; the couple share a daughter, Amelia Jane Henson, born in 2005. Throughout his career Brian Henson has blended imaginative storytelling with technical mastery, ensuring the Henson brand remains a vibrant force in contemporary entertainment.
