Borrah Minevitch

**Borrah Minevitch** (born **Boruch Minewitz**, 1902‑11‑05) was a Russian‑American *harmonica* virtuoso whose career spanned the golden era of vaudeville and early sound cinema. Born in the village of Borovino near Minsk in the Russian Empire, he emigrated with his parents and six siblings to Boston in 1906 after his father’s sudden death. In Boston he sold newspapers, learned piano and violin, and quickly fell in love with the chromatic harmonica, a fascination that would define his lifelong profession. At eighteen he relocated to New York City, studying while working in a shoe shop and performing on the harmonica to attract customers at a Wurlitzer store. His talent caught the eye of the Hohner company, which hired him as a publicist and later paid a reported one‑million‑dollar sum for the rights to his innovative harmonica techniques, spawning the successful “Borrah Minevitch” line of instruments.

In the early 1920s Minevitch pioneered the concept of a harmonica orchestra, recruiting about twenty‑five school‑age musicians to form the Symphonic Harmonica Ensemble, which appeared at the Metropolitan Opera House and on Broadway and recorded “Hayseed Rag” in 1926. After meeting the diminutive Johnny Puleo he reshaped the group into the nine‑member Harmonica Rascals, infusing slap‑stick comedy and flamboyant showmanship; the act became a staple of vaudeville and later starred in a series of Hollywood shorts and feature films such as *Lazy Bones* (1934) and *One in a Million* (1936). Minevitch also built a harmonica factory in Southern California, promoted elaborate publicity stunts, and, after World War II, moved to Paris where he supported French cinema and hosted expatriate entertainers. He married actress Betty Henry (with whom he had a daughter, Lydia) and later artist Lucille Watson‑Little; he died of a cerebral hemorrhage shortly after his second marriage in June 1955, leaving a legacy as one of the most charismatic and entrepreneurial musicians of his time.
