Boris Zakhava

Boris Yevgenyevich Zakhava (May 24, 1896 – November 12, 1976) was a towering figure of Soviet theatre, renowned as an actor of extraordinary presence, a visionary director, and a dedicated pedagogue whose influence stretched across six decades. Born in Pavlograd, then part of the Yekaterinoslav Governorate of the Russian Empire, he grew up in a military family; his father Yevgeny Zakhava was an officer and a graduate of the Moscow Imperial Cadet School, a tradition that Boris followed by completing his own education at the 3rd Moscow Imperial Cadet School in 1913. While still a cadet, he discovered his passion for performance through amateur productions and even participated in the 1912 centennial celebrations of the victory over Napoleon in Moscow, experiences that honed his early stagecraft. Between 1913 and 1916 he studied under the legendary avant‑garde master Vsevolod Meyerhold, and subsequently joined the studio of Yevgeny Vakhtangov, whose mentorship would define his entire professional trajectory. Zakhava was hired by Vakhtangov as an actor and spent his whole career at the Vakhtangov Theatre, debuting in 1922 as Timur in Carlo Gozzi’s Turandot and later becoming a leading director of the company. From 1925 onward he taught at the acting studio, eventually leading the Shchukin Theatrical School—formerly the Vakhtangov acting studio—until his death. His directorial achievements include critically acclaimed productions of Maxim Gorky’s Yegor Bulychev and Others (1932, 1951), Dostoevsky‑inspired works, and a 1958 staging of Shakespeare’s Hamlet starring Mikhail Astangov. In cinema he is perhaps best remembered for his powerful portrayal of Field Marshal Mikhail Kutuzov in Sergei Bondarchuk’s Oscar‑winning epic War and Peace. Zakhava’s contributions earned him the highest artistic honors of his time: the titles of People's Artist of the RSFSR (1946) and of the USSR (1967), the Stalin Prize (1952), numerous orders and medals, and a place of burial at Moscow’s prestigious Novodevichy Cemetery.
