Born on 13 February 1941 in Gothenburg, Sweden, he grew up as the son of Birger Ragnar Svensson, an athlete who served as a personal driver and bodyguard to the Swedish king, and Iris Viola "Lola" Svensson, a musician and big‑band leader. At the age of seventeen he emigrated to the United States, where he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served six years, earning an honorable discharge. During his service he was stationed in Japan, where he attained his first black‑belt rank (Shodan) in judo at the Kodokan and became the 1961 Far East Judo Heavyweight Champion. After leaving the Marines he settled in Florida, working a variety of jobs—including professional race‑car driver—before turning to acting. He later naturalized as a United States citizen, adding American nationality to his Swedish roots, and eventually earned a fourth‑degree (Yondan) black belt, underscoring his lifelong commitment to martial arts.
