What's After the Movie

Bo Holmström

Bo Eric Holmström (born 18 October 1938 in Stockholm, Sweden) was one of Sweden’s most respected journalists, known for his calm demeanor and unflinching pursuit of truth. He began his career in the early 1960s, quickly establishing himself as a reliable reporter for Sveriges Television (SVT) before moving to the commercial network TV4, where his incisive reporting continued for decades. Holmström’s breakthrough came in 1973 when he covered the infamous Norrmalmstorg robbery, an event that later inspired the term “Stockholm syndrome”; his on‑scene accounts brought the drama into living rooms across the nation and demonstrated his ability to convey tension without sensationalism. Two years later he reported on the West German Embassy siege in Stockholm, further cementing his reputation as the go‑to correspondent for high‑risk, politically charged incidents. In addition to crisis coverage, Holmström was noted for his human‑interest stories and investigative pieces, often blending meticulous fact‑checking with a storytelling style that resonated with viewers. Perhaps his most poignant moment came on 11 September 2003, when he was the first journalist to announce the death of Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh, delivering the tragic news from Karolinska Hospital with measured gravitas that underscored his professionalism. The same dedication earned him the prestigious Stora journalistpriset in 2007, recognizing a lifetime of outstanding journalism, and an honorary Kristallen award in 2015 for his contributions to Swedish television. Despite his public profile, Holmström’s personal life remained relatively private. A serious bout of gangrene in 2016 forced the amputation of his leg, and he spent his final months in a nursing home in Vagnhärad. He passed away on 12 October 2017, just six days shy of his 79th birthday, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, courage, and an indelible impact on Swedish media.
