Blanca Portillo

Blanca Portillo Martínez de Velasco was born on 15 June 1963 in Madrid, Spain, and grew up surrounded by the vibrant cultural life of the capital. After completing her secondary education, she enrolled at the prestigious Real Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático (RESAD), where she earned a degree in drama and honed a versatile technique that would later serve her across film, television, and stage. Her early professional years were spent in modest theatrical productions, with her first documented stage credit appearing in El mal de la juventud (1985). A breakthrough arrived in 1994 when she portrayed Carol in David Mamet’s Oleanna under the direction of Joaquín Kremel, signaling her arrival as a serious theatre actress.

Portillo made her feature‑film debut in Entre rojas (1995) and quickly became a household name after being cast as the outspoken hairdresser Carlota in the hit Telecinco sitcom Siete vidas (1999‑2004). The series, which ran for ten years and 204 episodes, showcased her comic timing and cemented her status in Spanish popular culture. Simultaneously, she earned a Goya nomination for Best New Actress for The Color of the Clouds (1997) and contributed to the Spanish dubbing of Finding Nemo. Her filmography expanded with daring choices: she shaved her head to play a male Inquisitor in Alatriste (2005), delivered a poignant performance as Agustina in Pedro Almodóvar’s Volver (2006), and portrayed Maria Luisa of Parma in Miloš Forman’s Goya’s Ghosts. In addition to acting, Portillo cultivated a reputation as a theatre director and producer, helming productions such as La avería (2011) and Desorientados (2004). Recent years have seen a return to television (Hospital Central, Acusados) and continued stage work, including the 2023 production La madre de Frankenstein.
