What's After the Movie
Birol Ünel (18 August 1961 – 3 September 2020) was a Turkish‑German actor whose career spanned over three decades across film, television and stage. Born in Silifke, a district of Mersin in southern Turkey, he moved with his family to Brinkum near Bremen, Germany in 1968, where he later pursued formal training at the Musikhochschule Hannover. His early work was rooted in Berlin’s avant‑garde scene, notably at the Tacheles art‑centre, where he not only performed the lead in the controversial production of Caligula but also directed the play, showcasing a blend of raw intensity and theatrical daring that would become his hallmark. Ünel made his screen debut in 1988 with The Passenger and quickly built a reputation for portraying complex, often troubled characters; a private detective in Dealer and a supporting role in Fatih Akin’s In July paved the way for his breakthrough. The 2004 Akin masterpiece Head‑On (Gegen die Wand) cast him as the volatile alcoholic Cahit Tomruk, a performance that earned him the Deutscher Filmpreis for Best Actor and contributed to the film’s Golden Bear triumph at the Berlin International Film Festival, launching Ünel onto the international stage. Afterward he appeared in notable projects such as the Turkish comedy Hırsız var! (2005), Transylvania (2006), Seven Heroes (2007) and Fatih Akin’s Soul Kitchen (2009), demonstrating versatility across genres. Despite his artistic successes, Ünel’s later years were marred by personal struggles with alcoholism, minor legal issues, and periods of homelessness, which gradually curtailed his professional output. He died in a Berlin hospital on 3 September 2020 after battling cancer, leaving behind a legacy of powerful, emotionally resonant performances that continue to influence a new generation of European actors.
