Big Freedia, born Freddie Ross Jr. on January 28, 1978 in New Orleans, Louisiana, is a pioneering figure in the bounce music scene, a high‑energy subgenre of Southern hip‑hop. From an early age she absorbed church choir harmonies, piano lessons, and the soulful sounds of Patti LaBelle, Sylvester, and Salt‑N‑Peppa, which laid the groundwork for her charismatic stage presence. After graduating from Walter L. Cohen High School, where she directed the choir, Freedia entered the local clubs in the late 1990s, adopting the moniker “Big Freedia Queen Diva” after a friend’s nickname and her mother’s club name. Her debut single “An Ha, Oh Yeah” (1999) and subsequent hits like “Rock Around the Clock” and “Gin ’N My System” quickly cemented her reputation as a relentless performer, eventually leading to her first studio album Queen Diva in 2003. The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina forced her to relocate temporarily to Texas, where she continued to spread bounce culture, returning to New Orleans to spearhead “FEMA Fridays” at Caesar’s, a club that symbolized the city’s resilient revival. Over the next decade she built a prolific discography, collaborated with icons such as Beyoncé, Drake, Kesha, and Lizzo, and broke into mainstream media with a reality series on Fuse, multiple TV appearances, and a role on HBO’s Treme.

Beyond music, Freedia has authored an autobiography, launched a design business, and become an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ visibility and gun‑violence awareness, especially after losing her brother to homicide. Her gender‑fluid identity—comfortably using both she/her and he/him pronouns—has sparked important conversations about representation in hip‑hop. Despite legal setbacks involving housing benefits, she has turned adversity into activism, earning honors like the Best Emerging Artist award (2011) and serving as an Artist Ambassador for US Independent Venue Week (2022). Today, with albums such as Central City (2023) and upcoming projects, Big Freedia remains a vital cultural catalyst, continually reshaping the soundscape of contemporary American music.
