Ben Kruger

Ben Kruger (25 March 1957 – 26 May 2021) was a South African actor and author whose career spanned over three decades, leaving an indelible mark on television, film, and stage. Born in Bothaville, Orange Free State, he moved with his family to Cape Town at age two and later to Johannesburg, where he completed his schooling at Helpmekaar Boys' High School, a period that nurtured his early love for drama. After serving an 18‑month stint in the South African Navy, he earned a BA in Drama from the University of Pretoria, a qualification that propelled him into the world of professional theatre. Kruger’s theatrical debut came with the play Die Huigelaar in 1986, and he quickly became a staple of South African stage productions, appearing in works such as It’s a Boy!, Seiner in die Suburbs, and directing Heart Like a Stomach at the Windybrow Theatre. His screen breakthrough arrived with a 1973 film role as Dirkie Uys in Die Voortrekkers, followed by notable performances in Cry, the Beloved Country (1995), Snake Island (2002), and Stander (2003). Television audiences most fondly remembered him as “Neef Gert” in 7de Laan, “Sakkie Bezuidenhoudt” in Zero Tolerance, and especially “Okkie Ferreira” in the long‑running soap Binnelanders, a role he inhabited from 2011 until his death. Though he never secured a Golden Horn award, he garnered three nominations, reflecting industry respect for his supporting performances. Off‑screen, Kruger was a devoted father to three children—Niku, Ivan, and Daniel—and remained active in writing, co‑authoring the play Kaspar in Kasablankah. His sudden passing on 26 May 2021 from COVID‑19 complications marked the end of a prolific era in South African entertainment.
