Anthony Fauci

Anthony Stephen Fauci is an American physician‑scientist and immunologist whose career has spanned more than five decades of public‑health service. Born on December 24 1940 in Brooklyn, New York City, he was the youngest of two children of a pharmacist father and a mother who helped run the family drugstore, experiences that sparked his early interest in medicine. After graduating from Regis High School, Fauci earned a BA in classics with a pre‑medical track from the College of the Holy Cross in 1962 and received his MD from Cornell University in 1966, ranking first in his class. He joined the National Institutes of Health in 1968 as a clinical associate, quickly rising to head of the Laboratory of Clinical Investigation and later becoming director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in 1984, a position he held until 2022. During his tenure, Fauci guided U.S. responses to a series of emerging infectious threats, including HIV/AIDS, SARS, the 2009 H1N1 swine‑flu, Ebola, and COVID‑19, earning him a reputation as one of the world’s most cited scientists. He was instrumental in creating the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), which has saved millions of lives, and he played a central role on the White House Coronavirus Task Force under both President Trump and President Biden. His public communication style combined scientific rigor with compassionate clarity, often employing bold statements to encourage mask‑wearing and social distancing. Fauci’s contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, such as the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2008), the Lasker Award for Public Service (2007), the National Medal of Science (2005), and the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (2020). He has authored more than 1,300 scientific papers, edited multiple editions of Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine, and received honorary degrees from institutions worldwide. Married to bioethicist Christine Grady since 1985, the couple raised three daughters. Even after his retirement from federal service in 2022, Fauci continues to teach at Georgetown University and remains a leading voice on global health policy.
