Allan F. Nicholls

Allan F. Nicholls (born April 8, 1945 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada) is a multifaceted Canadian artist whose career spans acting, directing, producing, screenwriting, composing, and musicianship, making him a notable figure in North American entertainment. Emerging in the mid‑1960s as the lead vocalist for the RCA‑signed group J.B. & The Playboys, which later evolved into The Jaybees and then Carnival Connection under Capitol, Nicholls showcased a resonant voice that helped the ensembles achieve regional chart success. After a brief but memorable stint as Claude in the groundbreaking musical Hair, he returned to his native Montreal to front the progressive rock band Mashmakhan, contributing to the city's vibrant music scene before launching a solo recording career that produced several Canadian chart entries and a retrospective anthology released by Super Oldies in 2005. Transitioning to film in the early 1970s, Nicholls quickly proved his versatility; he appeared as the charismatic team captain Johnny Upton in the cult classic Slap Shot, a role that cemented his popularity with mainstream audiences. Behind the camera, his writing earned critical acclaim, most notably a BAFTA and Writers Guild of America nomination for the 1978 romantic drama A Wedding, and he continued to pen screenplays such as A Perfect Couple (1979). As a director, he helmed projects including the eerie thriller Dead Ringer (1982) and the experimental musical documentary I Am a Hotel (1983), while his compositional talents enriched soundtracks for films like Nashville (1975) and A Perfect Couple (1979). Nicholls’s artistic lineage is also distinguished; his grandfather, Riley Hern, was a legendary goaltender for the Montreal Wanderers who guarded the net during three Stanley Cup victories in 1908, 1909, and 1911, linking Allan to a heritage of Canadian cultural achievement.
