Alicia Fernández

Alicia Fernández Fraga is a distinguished Spanish handball centre‑back born on 21 December 1992 in the coastal town of Valdoviño. From a young age she displayed a physicality and tactical awareness that set her apart, and she entered the senior ranks with BM Sagunto in 2009, beginning a professional journey that would span more than a decade. After three seasons she moved to BM Porriño (2012‑2014) where she honed her defensive skills, followed by a brief spell at BM Aula Valladolid before signing for the dominant Super Amara Bera Bera in 2015. At Bera Bera she contributed to league triumphs in 2016 and 2017 and helped the club capture multiple Spanish Cups and League Cups, cementing her reputation as a reliable backbone of the defense. In 2021 she embraced a new challenge abroad, joining Romanian side SCM Râmnicu Vâlcea, where she quickly adapted to the Liga Națională and earned the Foreign Player of the Year award in 2019. Her club success is mirrored on the international stage; she earned her first cap for Spain in 2018 and has since accumulated over a hundred appearances, scoring an impressive tally of goals for a defender. Fernández was a key member of the Spanish squad that captured gold at the 2018 Mediterranean Games and she represented her nation at both the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympic Games, showcasing her resilience and leadership.
