Alfred Schieske

Born in Stuttgart on September 6, 1908, to a German father and French mother, Alfred Schieske pursued his passion for acting through rigorous training under the tutelage of Willy Reichert. His artistic journey commenced at the tender age of 19 when he made his theatrical debut at the prestigious Staatstheater Stuttgart, marking the beginning of a prolific career that would span over four decades. Following his initial success, Schieske honed his craft through engagements in various German cities including Heidelberg, Esslingen, and Bochum, developing a reputation for his powerful stage presence and versatility. In 1940, he achieved a significant milestone by joining the renowned Berlin Staatstheater under the leadership of the legendary Gustaf Gründgens, solidifying his status as a prominent figure in German theater during a tumultuous period in history.

Following the devastation of World War II, Schieske's career entered a new phase as he relocated to Cologne before returning to Berlin in 1947. He secured a position at the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm, remaining there until 1950. Throughout the subsequent decades, he became a fixture in West Berlin's vibrant theatrical landscape, performing at the Schiller and Schlosspark theaters while also maintaining active engagements in Düsseldorf, Recklinghausen, and Jagsthausen. His extensive repertoire encompassed challenging dramatic roles including Milota in König Ottokars Glück und Ende, Klesel in Ein Bruderzwist in Habsburg, and the iconic Alfred P. Doolittle in My Fair Lady, which he performed from 1961 in both Berlin and Hamburg. Beyond the stage, Schieske cultivated a substantial film and television career, most notably portraying Otto Bonte in the 1948 DEFA production Affaire Blum, where he played a criminal investigator who saves a Jewish man from false accusations. His screen work expanded in the 1960s to include adaptations of literary classics such as Hans Fallada's works, while his final performances included roles in Pippi in the South Seas and the television film Peenemünde before his untimely death on July 14, 1970.
