Alfred Rasser

Alfred Rasser (29 May 1907 – 18 August 1977) was a Swiss cabarettist, comedian and prolific actor whose career spanned almost five decades, leaving an indelible mark on German‑language stage, radio, television and cinema. Born in Basel to Berta and Emil Rasser, he lost his father at age eleven and helped his mother support four children while completing an apprenticeship as a merchant. After an early stint as a chicken farmer in Ticino, he pursued drama at the Basel conservatory, studying under Oskar Wälterlin and Rosalia Chladek, and founded his own theatre company in 1930. His talent quickly brought him to the Stadttheater Basel, the Corso‑Theater in Zürich and prestigious venues such as the Opéra du Rhin, where he performed a range of roles from classical ballets to the comedic frog in Die Fledermaus. Between 1952 and 1975 he dazzled audiences with one‑man programmes across Switzerland and southern Germany, and his son Roland later continued the family’s theatrical legacy. Rasser’s most famous creation, Theophil Läppli, a satirical Swiss soldier parody inspired by The Good Soldier Švejk, debuted in the 1945 cabaret‑folk production HD‑Soldat Läppli and spawned a series of successful films and stage works that cemented his status as a cultural icon. In addition to his artistic pursuits, he was politically active, serving as a Nationalrat for the Landesring der Unabhängigen from 1967 to 1975, championing peace, social justice and the arts. His personal life saw two marriages—first to Adele Schnell, with whom he had his son Roland, and later to Ninette Rosselat, bringing four children into his family—while he also managed a painter company during the early 1930s. Rasser’s legacy endures through his memorable performances, his contributions to Swiss cabaret, and his influence on subsequent generations of entertainers.
