Alexis Michalik

Alexis Michalik (born 13 December 1982) is a Franco‑British actor, scriptwriter and director known for revitalising classic texts with inventive staging. Raised in the Abbesses neighbourhood of the 18th arrondissement of Paris, he is the son of a Polish artist father and a British mother, which endowed him with a bilingual cultural background. He attended the Collège Jules‑Ferry and later the conservatoire in the 19th arrondissement before passing the competitive entrance exam for the Conservatoire national supérieur d’art dramatique (CNSAD). His first professional stage role came in 2001 as Roméo in Juliette et Roméo at the Théâtre de Chaillot, and he quickly abandoned his place at CNSAD in 2003 to create his own adaptation of Le Mariage de Figaro, launching the theatre company Los Figaros at the Avignon Off Festival. Over the next few years he devised works such as La Mégère à peu près apprivoisée (2006) and R&J (2008), blending Shakespearean material with contemporary humor and often performing multiple roles himself. Since 2010 Michalik has become one of France’s most celebrated playwright‑directors, earning multiple Molière awards for both writing and directing. Le Porteur d’histoire (2011) and Le Cercle des illusionnistes (2014) garnered critical acclaim and nominations in categories ranging from Best Private Theatre Production to Best Visual Creation, while the latter intertwined the lives of Robert‑Houdin and Georges Méliès. His 2016 masterpiece Edmond, a meta‑theatrical exploration of the creation of Cyrano de Bergerac, received seven Molière nominations and solidified his reputation for inventive storytelling. In 2017 he ventured into prison‑theatre with Intra Muros, and in 2021 he directed the French stage version of The Producers, which collected five nominations at the Trophées de la comédie musicale, winning Best Production. Parallel to his theatre success, Michalik has acted in films such as Sagan (2008) and television series including Kaboul Kitchen (since 2012) and Versailles (2015). He debuted as a feature‑film director with the cinematic adaptation of Edmond in 2019, following earlier short films Au Sol (2013) and Pim‑Poum le petit Panda (2014). Today he continues to write, direct and act, often maintaining up to six productions on Parisian stages simultaneously, marking him as a prolific and influential figure in contemporary French theatre.
