What's After the Movie
Albert Austin (13 December 1882 – 17 August 1953) was an English actor, film star, director, and script writer whose career is inseparably linked to the golden age of silent comedy and the legendary Charlie Chaplin. Born in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, Austin began as a music‑hall performer before joining Chaplin and the Fred Karno troupe on their 1910 voyage to the United States, a move that would cement his place in film history. Recognised for his painted handlebar moustache and acerbic manner, he became a cornerstone of Chaplin’s stock company, often playing the dead‑pan foil to Chaplin’s beloved Tramp. He appeared in numerous Chaplin shorts for the Mutual Film Corporation, most famously in The Pawnshop (1916) where his stoic reaction to the dissection of his alarm clock showcases his impeccable timing. Austin also contributed off‑screen, assisting Chaplin in shaping the plot of The Adventurer (1917) and later earning a sole screen credit as a collaborator on the classic City Lights (1931).
Beyond his Chaplin collaborations, Austin enjoyed a varied career in the 1920s, starring opposite Mary Pickford in Suds (1920)—notably appearing without his signature moustache—and taking brief, uncredited roles in other silent‑to‑sound transition films. As the industry evolved, he shifted toward scriptwriting, directing, and acting in comedy shorts, and even served as a police officer at Warner Brothers Studios in his later years. Austin passed away in North Hollywood, California, on 17 August 1953 and was laid to rest at Grand View Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale. His legacy endures as a vital, though often under‑celebrated, contributor to early cinematic comedy.
