Alanis Obomsawin

Alanis Obomsawin (born August 31, 1932) is an Abenaki American‑Canadian filmmaker, singer, visual artist, and activist whose work has become a cornerstone of Indigenous documentary cinema. Born near Lebanon, New Hampshire, she spent her early childhood on the Odanak reserve in Quebec before moving to Trois‑Rivières, where she was the only Native family and learned to preserve the songs and legends taught by her mother’s cousin Théophile Panadis. After her father’s death from tuberculosis at age twelve, she left the reserve at twenty‑two, spent two years in Florida mastering English, and later returned to Montreal, where she launched a career as a folk singer, touring North America and performing at festivals and prisons. Her 1960 debut at Town Hall in Manhattan marked the start of a parallel path in advocacy; raising funds for a swimming pool in Odanak attracted the attention of the National Film Board of Canada, which invited her to work as an advisor and eventually to direct her own documentaries. Since directing Christmas at Moose Factory in 1971, Obomsawin has created more than fifty NFB films that give voice to First Nations peoples, covering events such as the 1990 Oka Crisis in Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance and the Attawapiskat housing emergency in The People of the Kattawapiskak River. Her oeuvre blends meticulous investigative journalism with poetic storytelling, often featuring personal testimonies, traditional songs, and her own emotive narration. In addition to filmmaking, she has released the album Bush Lady, worked as an engraver and print‑maker for over twenty‑five years, and taught at the Summer Institute of Film and Television. Recognized with the Order of Canada, the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award, the Prix Albert‑Tessier, and the 2023 Edward MacDowell Medal, Obomsawin’s lifelong dedication to cultural preservation and social justice continues to inspire new generations of artists and activists.
