Akiko Yano

Akiko Yano, born Akiko Suzuki on February 13, 1955 in Tokyo, Japan, is celebrated as one of the most versatile figures in Japanese popular music, seamlessly weaving together pop, jazz, funk, disco, new wave, and avant‑garde electronic textures. Raised in the rural prefecture of Aomori, she began piano lessons at age three and by her teens had abandoned formal schooling to pursue a professional career in Tokyo’s bustling jazz clubs, quickly becoming a sought‑after studio musician and even performing with the rock‑oriented group Tin Pan Alley. Her breakthrough arrived in 1976 with the debut album Japanese Girl, recorded in Los Angeles with members of Little Feat; the record’s nine self‑written tracks showcased her idiosyncratic blend of blues‑inflected pop, traditional Japanese folk motifs, and improvisational jazz, earning both commercial success and critical acclaim. Throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s Yano forged a close partnership with Yellow Magic Orchestra, appearing on two world tours and providing backing for her electro‑pop‑leaning album Gohan ga Dekitayo (1980), one of the earliest compact‑disc releases. 1981’s Tadaima highlighted her willingness to experiment, juxtaposing radio‑friendly side‑one material with an avant‑garde side based on children’s short stories, while the single “Harusaki Kobeni” entered the top‑40 thanks to a cosmetics campaign. After a brief hiatus to raise her son Fuuta and later her daughter Miu with husband Ryuichi Sakamoto, Yano returned to her jazz roots with Welcome Back (1989), featuring collaborations with Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, and Peter Erskine, and relocated to New York City in 1990 to further expand her international profile. In addition to her extensive discography, she contributed vocal performances and sound‑effect work for Studio Ghibli films such as My Neighbors the Yamadas and voiced a role in Ponyo, while her live career has spanned prestigious festivals from Montreux to the North Sea Jazz Festival, and regular appearances at New York’s Blue Note and Tokyo’s Blue Note venues.
