Adjoa Andoh

Adjoa Aiboom Helen Andoh was born on 14 January 1963 in Clifton, Bristol, England to an English teacher mother and a Ghanaian journalist‑musician father, a mixed‑heritage background that would later inform her nuanced portrayals on stage and screen. She spent her childhood in Wickwar, Gloucestershire, after her family relocated due to her father's employment with British Aerospace, and attended Katharine Lady Berkeley’s School before enrolling in law at Bristol Polytechnic – a path she abandoned after two years to pursue acting, signing her first Equity contract in 1985 with Theatre Centre. From the late 1980s through the 1990s, Andoh built a formidable theatre résumé, appearing in Royal Shakespeare Company productions such as Troilus and Cressida and Julius Caesar, and at the National Theatre in Stuff Happens and The Revenger’s Tragedy. Her early television work included roles in EastEnders and the long‑running medical drama Casualty, where she played Colette Griffiths from 2000‑2003. She broke into the sci‑fi mainstream with multiple appearances in Doctor Who, most memorably as Francine Jones, mother of companion Martha Jones, cementing her status as a versatile British character actress.

Since 2020, Andoh has become a household name worldwide through her commanding performance as Lady Danbury in the Netflix Regency romance series Bridgerton, a role praised for its blend of gravitas and wit. Her film credits include the acclaimed 2009 Clint Eastwood drama Invictus, where she portrayed Brenda Mazibuko alongside Morgan Freeman, a role she later cited as one of her three most satisfying. Beyond acting, she is a prolific narrator of over 150 audiobooks and a respected voice in radio drama, earning the moniker “Queen of audio and radio drama” from Penguin Random House. In recognition of her contributions, Andoh was elected an honorary fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2022 and appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2025 Birthday Honours. She remains active as an associate artist with the Royal Shakespeare Company, a senior associate at the Bush Theatre, and a vocal advocate for trans rights and racial equality in the arts.
