Abril Zamora

Abril Zamora Peláez is a Spanish actress, screenwriter and director whose artistic trajectory spans film, television and theater, making her one of the most versatile creators of her generation. Born on 11 November 1981 in Cerdanyola del Vallès, Catalonia, Spain, she began performing as a teenager playing King Arthur in a school production of Merlín el encantador, an early sign of her appetite for breaking gender norms. After studying drama, she co‑founded the experimental theatre company Oscura Teatre with Sergio Caballero, authoring and starring in productions such as El congelador (2008), La indiferencia de los armadillos (2009) and Todas muertas (2010), all of which showcased her talent for dark comedy and social critique. In 2014 she wrote, directed and performed in the choral tragicomedy Yernos que aman, a four‑season run at La Pensión de Las Pulgas in Madrid that cemented her reputation as a bold playwright and director.  Her on‑screen break‑through came in 2017 when, amid her personal gender transition, she was cast in a small role on the FOX Spain series Vis a Vis; the character evolved into Luna, a recurring role that earned her a nomination for Best Newcomer Actress at the Actors and Actresses Union Awards and gave visibility to LGBT+ narratives in mainstream media.  Beyond acting, Zamora has created and written the Telecinco series Señoras del (h)AMPA (2019), contributed to the screenwriting team of Netflix’s hit Élite, and starred in international projects such as the Italian film The Life Ahead alongside Sophia Loren.  In 2021 she launched the HBO Max series Todo lo otro, serving as creator, director and lead actress, a project that explores the complexities of thirties‑year‑old friendships with sharp humor and emotional depth.  Through documentary work like The Best Day of My Life (2018) and outspoken advocacy for trans representation, Abril continues to push for greater diversity and authenticity in audiovisual storytelling, making her a cultural trailblazer and a vital voice for contemporary Spanish cinema and television.
