What's After the Movie
Abbi Jacobson is an American comedian, actress, writer, producer, and illustrator whose career has spanned more than a decade, beginning with the 2009 web series Broad City that she co‑created with Ilana Glazer. Born on February 1, 1984 in Wayne, Pennsylvania, she grew up in a creative household—her mother Susan Komm is an artist and her father Alan Jacobson a graphic designer—while attending Hebrew school and celebrating a Bat Mitzvah, experiences that later informed the Jewish cultural references woven throughout her work. After earning a B.F.A. in General Fine Arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2006, Jacobson moved to New York City, where she honed her craft at the Upright Citizens Brigade and the Atlantic Theater Company, eventually turning the Broad City web shorts into a critically acclaimed Comedy Central series that ran from 2014 to 2019, garnering a reputation for its bold feminist humor and authentic portrayal of millennial life. The show’s success opened doors to voice work in animated features such as The Lego Ninjago Movie (2017) and The Mitchells vs. the Machines (2021), as well as live‑action roles in films like Person to Person (2017) and 6 Balloons (2018). In 2020 Jacobson founded Tender Pictures, a production company dedicated to inclusive storytelling, and later co‑launched the Prelude fellowship to support under‑represented filmmakers. Her literary contributions include two coloring books, the bestselling Carry This Book (2016), and the essay collection I Might Regret This (2018), each reflecting her distinctive blend of humor and introspection. Beyond her artistic achievements, Jacobson has been an outspoken advocate for social justice, signing the Artists4Ceasefire open letter in 2023 and supporting the Film Workers for Palestine boycott in 2025. She publicly announced her relationship with actress Jodi Balfour in 2020, and the couple married in June 2024, continuing to be celebrated as prominent LGBTQ+ figures in the entertainment industry.
