Abbey Lincoln

Abbey Lincoln, born Anna Marie Wooldridge on August 6, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois, emerged as one of the most articulate and emotionally resonant voices in American jazz. The tenth of twelve children, she was raised in the modest town of Calvin Center, Michigan, before moving to Los Angeles and Honolulu where she performed under the stage name Gaby Lee. In 1956 she adopted the name Abbey Lincoln and released her debut album Abbey Lincoln's Affair… A Story of a Girl in Love, establishing a career built on deeply felt interpretations of standards and original compositions that often reflected the turbulence of the civil‑rights era. Influenced profoundly by Billie Holiday, Lincoln’s vocal phrasing combined plaintive melancholy with an unmistakable sense of urgency, a quality that made her a natural partner for drummer and activist Max Roach, whom she married in 1962. Their collaboration on Roach’s landmark 1960 album We Insist! Freedom Now Suite is widely regarded as the earliest full‑scale protest record in jazz, and Lincoln’s lyrics from that period helped galvanize listeners toward the fight for equality.

Beyond music, Lincoln pursued a notable acting career, appearing in films such as The Girl Can't Help It (1958), Nothing But a Man (1964) and For Love of Ivy (1968), the latter earning her a Golden Globe nomination. She continued to act on television throughout the 1970s and 1980s, and later delivered a memorable performance in Spike Lee’s Mo' Better Blues (1996). After a mid‑1970s tour of Africa she adopted the name Aminata Moseka, further emphasizing her connection to African heritage. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s Lincoln recorded for Verve, producing acclaimed albums such as Devil's Got Your Tongue (1992) and Abbey Sings Billie (1989). In 2003 she received the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master Award, cementing her legacy as a pioneering vocalist, songwriter, actress, and steadfast civil‑rights activist who continued performing into her seventies before passing away on August 14, 2010 in Manhattan.
