Instead of assisting, Daniel decides to alert the rest of the family, leading to a swift and brutal response where Charles is violently taken into a room and meets a gruesome fate. This chilling event hints at the dark, deadly traditions underpinning the Le Domas family.

Fast forward thirty years, the story centers on Alex, now played by Mark O’Brien, who is about to marry a woman named Grace, played by Samara Weaving. Originally nervous, Grace is eager to join the family’s vast gaming empire, which is the source of their immense wealth. The couple participates in a pre-wedding photoshoot with family members, including Daniel, now portrayed by Adam Brody, and others. The tension amongst the family is palpable—Tony, their father (Henry Czerny), maintains a disapproving stance, especially towards Grace, while Aunt Helene, now played by Nicky Guadagni, glares at her with suspicion and coldness. Their mother Becky, voiced by Andie MacDowell, advises Grace that only Alex’s opinion truly matters in their eyes.

The wedding ceremony takes place amid this charged atmosphere. Immediately afterward, Grace and Alex attempt to share an intimate moment, but Helene interrupts with a reminder that tradition mandates Grace must participate in a family game at midnight. Later that evening, the entire family gathers around a table, along with relatives such as Emilie, Alex and Daniel’s cousin played by Melanie Scrofano, her husband Fitch (Kristian Bruun), and their children, Georgie and Gabe. A family heirloom, a mysterious box, is passed around, with each member drawing a card to determine their game—an ancient tradition rooted in a pact made by their great-grandfather Victor, who struck a deal with a secret benefactor, Mr. Le Bail. The family’s wealth and the special box were granted with the stipulation that each generation must fulfill a part of the bargain.*

Grace draws the game “Hide and Seek,” and the room suddenly becomes tense with anticipation—Tony instructs her to stay hidden until dawn to win. However, the game is deadly: it involves hunting her down to kill her before sunrise, or else they will suffer the same fate. Grace is told to hide in a dumbwaiter, slipping into it with apprehensive nerves. Alex, trying to help her, warns her before she is discovered, and as she wanders through the mansion, disaster strikes—Clara, a maid played by Hanneke Talbot, is shot in the face by Emilie, who mistakes her for Grace. The family quickly intervenes, horrified, as Clara’s body is carried away. Grace, in shock, learns the horrifying truth— the family’s “game” is a deadly hunt, and failure to participate means certain death for her.*

With her heartbeat pounding, Grace quickly devises a plan. She trades her heels for tennis shoes, tearing off her dress to move more freely. As she attempts to escape, she is spotted by her family, who try to trap her. Emilie, now lively after her cocaine-fueled high, fires wildly but misses her. Grace manages to outrun her pursuers and finds a rifle, loading it with ammo she discovers in the kitchen. She takes cover outside while Alex desperately works to disable the house’s security systems. The family splits into factions, with Tony and Helene abandoning their usual decorum to hunt her down. Grace’s resourcefulness intensifies as she fights her way through the mansion, evading multiple members of her family—including a scene where she is nearly captured in the Goat Pit, filled with the remains of unlucky victims.*

Amid chaos, some family members insist on continuing the deadly ritual. Daniel, weary of their ruthlessness, starts seeing the horror and ultimately betrays the tradition. He helps Grace escape temporarily, but Stefan, the butler played by John Ralston, warns her that her safety is fleeting. Grace, now desperate and battered, manages to steal a car and contact a help line, only to have the car shut down by the family’s enforcer, Steven, who is later found dead after a car chase. Through a series of violent confrontations, Grace fights to survive as the mansion’s sinister plans unfold. Her resilience is on full display as she navigates treacherous traps, including falling into the Goat Pit again, which holds the remnants of past victims, and sustaining injuries that she fights through with grim determination.*

As the night advances, the family attempts to execute a ritual to sacrifice Grace to Mr. Le Bail, involving a series of disturbing rites with a chalice and dark incantations. However, Daniel secretly poisons their drinks, causing them to vomit violently. In the chaos, Grace takes the opportunity to fight back aggressively. Charity, played by Melanie Scrofano, shoots Daniel in the throat, and Grace seizes a gun from Charity, using it to defend herself. Meanwhile, Alex, initially hesitant and conflicted, eventually turns against his family, recognizing the evil within their traditions. As Grace fights to escape the rising flames set by her stricken family, she wields a lantern to fend off Tony, who attempts to attack her.

In a final act of defiance, Grace retrieves a mysterious box given to the family by their ancestor, which she uses as a weapon, bludgeoning Becky (portrayed by Andie MacDowell) to death. The ultimate confrontation culminates as Alex tries to save her, but he is ultimately swayed by the deadly legacy he has inherited. Grace, with the strength of a survivor, fights her way out into the daylight amid the chaos, as the mansion erupts in flames. The remaining family members meet explosive ends in a bizarre and violent spectacle, with each victim turned to pulp by the house’s destructive power—including the fatality of Helene, who blows up in a fiery explosion.

As the fire consumes the mansion, Grace—covered in blood but alive—watches with a mixture of relief and horror. She sits on the steps, smoking a cigarette as police and paramedics arrive on the scene. When asked what happened, she simply responds with a dry wit, “In-laws,” acknowledging the nightmarish ordeal she endured, and the twisted legacy she managed to escape from.*
