What Is Pinocchio: Unstrung About?
The premise of Pinocchio: Unstrung in 359 words, with nothing given away. The full story follows below.
Pinocchio: Unstrung transplants the classic fable into the hushed, oak-paneled corridors of an elite London preparatory school, where tradition and privilege mask something far more unsettling. Fourteen-year-old James, recently orphaned and sent to live with his reclusive grandfather Geppetto, drifts through this polished world trying to find his footing. The school setting hums with old-money rituals and unspoken hierarchies, and James’s quiet grief makes him an easy target among classmates who see vulnerability as an invitation. It is a place where the line between refinement and cruelty blurs with practiced ease.
Into this brittle world comes Pinocchio, a sentient wooden puppet fashioned by Geppetto in his shadowy basement workshop. Far from the whimsical creature of childhood memory, this Pinocchio is a haunting, lifelike figure whose stitched smile and hollow eyes suggest a deeper purpose than mere companionship. He is built to be James’s brother, a steadfast presence where loss has carved its hollows, and the bond between the boy and his new wooden sibling quickly takes on an intimate, protective intensity. Geppetto watches over them both with a quiet intensity that hints at secrets still locked in his cluttered workshop.
Lurking at the edges of this strange new family is the Cricket, a menacing figure whose guidance carries a weight of hidden agenda. As Pinocchio begins to learn about the human world and, with growing fascination, about human anatomy, the puppet confides a singular longing: to become a real boy like James. This wish, tender on the surface, sets the stage for a darker transformation. The Cricket’s whispered counsel and the puppet’s earnest desire to belong begin to intertwine in ways that feel increasingly ominous, casting long shadows over the otherwise ordinary rhythms of school life and friendship.
The film trades the whimsy of its source material for a moody, horror-tinged atmosphere where every creak of floorboards and every glance in a gilded hallway carries an undercurrent of dread. With its gothic sensibility and its portrait of a wooden child desperate to claim a place among the living, Pinocchio: Unstrung promises a story about belonging, identity, and the dangerous cost of becoming someone you were never meant to be.

Fourteen-year-old James, Cameron Bell, is sent to live with his grandfather Geppetto after his parents perish in a car accident. He befriends two other children, Zach and Michael, Elliott Spilling and Peter DeSouza-Feighoney respectively, but Zach dies from terminal cancer and Michael is forced to move due to his mother Mary’s new job as a hypnotherapist in the nearby town of Ashdown. Geppetto promises to build a friend who will never abandon his grandson again.
One year later, James and his classmates Mia Jessica Balmer and Dudley Jack Art Gray are constantly bullied by high school students Trey Toni Olabanji and Logan Luca Marandola. That night, James is awakened by strange noises and enters the basement where Geppetto works. He introduces James to Pinocchio, a sentient wooden puppet whose nose grows every time he lies. Geppetto explains he built Pinocchio to be James’ new friend.
As James and Pinocchio bond into a brotherly relationship, the puppet learns about human anatomy and wishes to become a real boy. While James is at school, Pinocchio enters the basement and finds a disfigured wooden creature who introduces herself as Pinocchio’s “Wood Mother.” She reminds him that he is just a puppet and will need human organs to become real. The next day, James takes Pinocchio to school; he explores the gym, but accidentally triggers a chain reaction that kills James’ teacher with a treadmill. Later, James introduces Pinocchio to Mia and Dudley.
While returning home in a taxi, a drunk driver crashes into them and James is hospitalized under the care of Dr. Christopher Robin. Remembering the Wood Mother’s words and realizing that perhaps he should eliminate the people who harm James, Pinocchio sneaks into the driver’s hospital room, rips his skin off and disembowels him to put his organs into his wooden chest. James returns home and, along with Mia and Dudley, enters the basement and finds notes written by Geppetto about his “failed works.” Meanwhile, Pinocchio tells his Wood Mother about the killings and she congratulates him while Cricket introduces Pinocchio to the Wood Mother. The Cricket encourages him to kill anybody who has put James in danger, and together they murder James’ school dentist to take out her teeth.
James, Mia, and Dudley watch tapes that reveal Geppetto created more wooden puppets before Pinocchio, whom he destroyed because he considered them imperfect to be James’ friends. Upon learning about Pinocchio’s killing spree, James, Mia, and Dudley attempt to warn Trey and Logan as they are his next targets. Pinocchio arrives at Logan’s house and breaks his girlfriend Georgia’s jaw with an axe. Georgia, Mya Brown, is fatally electrocuted by the Cricket while Pinocchio rips Logan’s tongue and eyes. In Trey’s house, Pinocchio kills his girlfriend Amanda, Karolina Ugrenyuk, tears off her scalp to use it, and murders Trey by impaling his skull with his growing nose.
Geppetto takes Pinocchio back home, repressing him for the murders. Pinocchio learns his Wood Mother and the Cricket tricked him into doing bad things, so he kills them both with a sledgehammer. James, Mia, and Dudley arrive at the basement just as Geppetto is about to destroy Pinocchio. When Pinocchio asks how he came to life, Geppetto reveals he used Zach’s corpse to build him, transferring Zach’s soul into the puppet. As James rescues Pinocchio, Geppetto shoots Dudley dead and knocks James unconscious before pursuing Mia to kill her, revealing himself to be an apprentice of the late Dr. Arthur Gallup and continuing experiments to resurrect dead children. James stabs Geppetto before Pinocchio holds him at gunpoint.
Pinocchio fires at Geppetto but misses, striking a panel that releases an aggressive wooden creature who kills Geppetto as the entire house begins to burn. James, Mia, and Pinocchio manage to escape and promise to forget what happened. When Pinocchio reveals that he did not enjoy killing people, his nose begins to grow again. In a post-credits scene, the Cricket is revealed to have survived and recovers Geppetto’s corpse to resurrect him.

What Are the Themes of Pinocchio: Unstrung?
4 ideas the story keeps returning to, among them Puppet Origins, Violent Awakening and Experimentation.
-
01
Puppet Origins
Pinocchio's life begins in a gruesome origin: Geppetto constructs him using a corpse and transfers a soul, turning a toy into a living being. The puppet's existence is tied to a dark, experimental act that questions what makes someone alive. This origin drives the entire plot as the line between tool and person blurs.
-
02
Violent Awakening
Pinocchio's awakening is marked by a spree of killings that escalates violence beyond a child's fable. The Wood Mother and Cricket steer his actions, forcing him to harm those who threaten James. The murder sequence reveals the cost of power and the corrupting lure of becoming 'real' through violent means.
-
03
Experimentation
Geppetto's experiments extend beyond Pinocchio, as notes reveal prior 'failed works' and the unfinished goal of reviving dead children. The plot frames science as a dangerous, morally ambiguous pursuit. The combination of puppets and resurrection exposes the dangers of playing god.
-
04
Family Trauma
James's family has been shattered by tragedy, including the death of his parents and Zach's illness, setting the stage for Geppetto's desperate promises. The relationships in James's life are strained by fear, loyalty, and the need for belonging. The story uses this trauma to explain the pull toward dangerous companionship in Pinocchio.
