Two days before the Normandy invasion, paratrooper Jim Southern is caught in a tense and dangerous situation deep within a forest, where intense gunfire echoes around him. Hanging upside down from a tree, Jim manages to free himself, carefully removing his parachute gear before grabbing his M3 grease gun. He quickly finds cover behind a tree as he surveys his surroundings, moving stealthily through the dense woods in an effort to evade enemy fire. During his cautious navigation, he’s momentarily mistaken for a German soldier by another paratrooper, William Cerino, known as “Cooledge”. Cerino, a skilled soldier with a past as a smokejumper of the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion “Triple Nickels”, was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division and acts as a radioman. Despite initial suspicion, the two quickly realize they’re on the same team, along with a third paratrooper named Tally, who are in search of Colonel Redding, who has fallen into enemy hands.

As they search the area, the trio discovers the colonel’s lifeless body hanging in the trees. Tally begins searching his remains for any vital information, but their mission takes a sudden turn when they are ambushed by a German patrol that results in the tragic death of Tally. Remaining alive but shaken, Jim and Cerino press forward through the forest, and after detecting an ominous sound indicating a larger threat nearby, they decide to lay mines and take cover. Their opportunistic stance pays off when they spot a flak wagon—an enemy vehicle—and prepare to attack. However, before they can strike, a large explosion erupts, engulfing the area in flames. This explosion reveals a group of three German soldiers, led by Lieutenant Dean Smith, along with Private Stu Boards and Medic Miller, who had initiated the ambush.

Eventually, the troops locate a nearby camp run by the 82nd Airborne, where General Haskel (/actor/kelsey-grammer) is interrogating captured Nazis about their activities. He explains to Jim and Cerino that their parachute drop was disastrous—landing nearly north of Amfreville—and that because of German river damming and flooding, their original plan to land safely was compromised. The Allies had anticipated the flooding, but the poorly coordinated drop left the 82nd cut off from the main invasion route, stranded behind enemy lines. Recognizing the importance of their mission, Haskel informs the soldiers that they will not return to their units but instead undertake a new, secret operation: rescuing two Maquis fighters held prisoner by the Nazis. One of these resistance members possesses crucial intelligence on a high-ranking Nazi SS officer, Ramsey, whom the Allies desperately want dead to buy time for the invasion at the beaches.

The squad’s new mission takes them to the village of La Fiere, which they secure after a fierce firefight. They encounter Jean Daquin, a French resistance fighter, who joins their efforts just in time to witness a Nazi patrol ambush. While Smith initially refuses Jean’s participation in combat, the Frenchman proves his bravery, saving several of the paratroopers from death—including Joe Anderson, who is almost killed by a Nazi. Despite Smith’s stern warnings for Jean to follow orders, the French resistance member earns the respect of the group after saving their lives. The team discusses their ultimate goal: reaching Bastogne with Ramsey’s head, as they know this could significantly delay the German advance and protect the Allied invasion forces.

As they move toward a strategic ridge, the paratroopers learn that the Germans are in full retreat, forcing them to decide whether to push forward or hold their ground. During a tense reconnaissance, they realize the enemy is disguising their patrols as Americans, and in a devastating attack, they lose William Cerino, who is shot but survives a ricochet. Smith is killed in the firefight, and the team swiftly buries him, mourning their fallen comrade. Meanwhile, General Haskel understands the critical situation unfolding and orders his remaining troops to defend a vital bridge against a Nazi counteroffensive, knowing that failure could allow Rommel’s forces to push the Allies back into the sea.

Night falls, and Miller takes the watch only to be killed by German soldiers in a brutal hand-to-hand fight. The survivors mourn the loss of their comrade and prepare for their next move. They argue about the harsh realities of war, with Jean revealing the tragic loss of his family at the hands of Ramsey, who, during the German invasion of his hometown, murdered his wife and daughter after promising peace—an act of betrayal that fuels Jean’s vendetta. As dawn approaches, the remaining soldiers, including Stubbs and Coolidge, recognize the importance of their mission against the formidable Murder Division, a veteran German panzer unit from the eastern front. Despite their fears, they steel themselves for the assault.

Finally, they locate the headquarters of the 12th SS Panzer Division “Hitlerjugend” in a house. Coordinating their attack with precision, Stubbs flanks to the right, Jean provides a bird’s-eye view from a nearby hill to cover their efforts, and Southern with Coolidge plans to plant explosives on ammunition trucks. Their plan initially succeeds as the team engages the enemy, but Ramsey spots the attack and orders reinforcements, leading to a fierce firefight. During the chaos, Stubbs is shot in the leg, and a truck carrying explosives nearly runs over Coolidge before detonating, sending shrapnel into Ramsey’s face in a nearby window but not killing him.

In the final confrontation inside the Nazi building, Southern and Jean fight fiercely to corner Ramsey, who almost kills Jean before Southern intervenes and shoots him dead. Ramsey, begging for mercy, offers vital intel before Jean, unwavering, pulls the trigger, ending his life instantly. The squad manages to rescue the captured paratroopers hidden in the basement of the Nazi compound, dealing a critical blow to the enemy’s plans. Meanwhile, Haskel’s remaining forces hold their ground at the vital beach sector, securing a chance for the Allies to establish a foothold amidst the chaos of the invasion—seen both as a strategic triumph and a chaotic disaster.

After their arduous mission, the exhausted paratroopers sit on a bench, sharing a moment of relief. Jean, having completed his vendetta, says goodbye to his new friends before disappearing into the woods, vowing to return home. Jim Southern indicates that their fight is far from over, telling Stubbs and Coolidge that the war is just getting started. Their shared experiences solidify their resolve as they prepare for what lies ahead, knowing that every battle, every loss, and every victory is a step toward the larger goal of freeing Europe from tyranny.
