Who Is Hellmut Lange?

Hellmut Lange was born in Germany in 1923. Credited on films since 1961, as an actor. The background, training and the roles that shaped the career.

Hellmut Lange (19 January 1923 – 13 January 2011) was a distinguished German actor and journalist who left an indelible mark on both the entertainment and media landscapes of post-war Germany. Born in the early 1920s, Lange began his career in the world of radio drama, performing for the prominent West German station Sender Freies Berlin (Radio Free Berlin). After completing his formal schooling, he undertook a rigorous two-year course of acting study in Hanover, which laid the foundation for his subsequent professional trajectory. Following his training, he embarked on a career as a stage actor in Munich, where he quickly gained prominence. In the early 1950s, Lange had the honor of portraying the iconic character Old Shatterhand on an open-air stage, an experience that cemented his reputation as a compelling performer. His transition to the screen was seamless, and he soon became a familiar face on German television, starring in numerous made-for-television films and showcasing his versatility as an actor. Among his most notable cinematic achievements was his role as Peter Clifton in the German Edgar Wallace adaptation The Forger of London (1961), a film that demonstrated his ability to inhabit complex characters. He also secured one of the leading roles in a TV mini-series based on a story by the renowned crime writer Francis Durbridge, further enhancing his television profile. Lange became a household name when he took on the role of the titular secret agent protagonist in the popular TV series John Kling (1965–1970), a part that solidified his status as an action hero on the small screen. Beyond his on-screen performances, Lange lent his distinctive voice to the German dubs of several Hollywood luminaries, including Richard Harris, Charlton Heston, and Paul Newman, providing the German-speaking audience with the familiar tones of these international stars. His deep passion for cinema eventually led him to pursue a parallel career in journalism, where he contributed articles about film and ultimately became the celebrated presenter of the German television quiz program Kennen Sie Kino? (Do You Know Film?), which ran from 1971 to 1981. Lange continued to work as an actor well into his seventies, until serious health issues in 2009 forced his retirement. He also played Natty Bumppo in a European miniseries based on James Fenimore Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales and made an appearance in the acclaimed film Patton (1970). His legacy endures through the digital remastering and DVD release of beloved series such as Lederstrumpf and John Kling's Abenteuer.
