During the intense and tumultuous period of the 1999 NATO bombing of Kosovo, a middle-aged man named Vlada is hired to act as a courier, transporting a mysterious truck through war-torn Kosovo to Belgrade. The nature of the cargo remains a closely guarded secret, leaving Vlada in the dark about what he’s carrying. Having completed this type of journey twice before, he is given strict instructions: once he departs, he must not stop under any circumstances. His task begins at a designated site where the unfamiliar truck waits for him, and from the moment Vlada starts his journey, he faces numerous challenges.

Early into his drive, Vlada encounters a devastating scene—a burning car wreck at a bridge—which forces him to take a detour to a nearby riverbed. There, he finds refuge among a group of refugees attempting to survive amidst chaos. They provide him with directions and, in one instance, a cigarette from a local who sells cigarettes to travelers. As Vlada navigates this dangerous landscape, a young man named Lasha Gurgenidze’s character, Paja, approaches him seeking a ride to Belgrade. Vlada refuses at first, wary of the stranger’s intentions, despite Paja offering to help him find his way through the countryside.

However, Paja manages to hitch a ride by standing on the back of the truck, and he pleads with Vlada to let him join, describing himself as cold and desperate. Reluctantly, Vlada allows him aboard. Throughout the journey, they witness the devastating effects of the war in Kosovo—the destroyed landscapes, displaced families, and the visible scars left on the region. During their conversations, they reveal that both come from traditional, upstanding backgrounds, yet they are very different in outlook and experience.

Paja shares cassette tapes of his band’s music, which Vlada listens to with headphones, and this exchange offers a glimpse into the young man’s hopes and dreams amid the chaos. As their journey progresses, Vlada admits that he does not know—or care to know—the contents of the cargo he is transporting. The tension of the operation increases when they narrowly avoid law enforcement officials who are suspicious of the truck. Ultimately, before reaching Belgrade, Paja decides to leave the truck, giving Vlada his cassette as a parting gift and encouraging him to reach out if he ever wants to join his band. The film concludes with Paja wandering alone in a dilapidated playground under the cover of night, seemingly with nowhere else to go.

Vlada successfully reaches his destination and receives his payment. His arrival is marked by a somber scene as he walks through a government office building, where he witnesses soldiers unloading dead bodies from the truck and piling them into a mass grave—an indelible reminder of the brutal reality of the conflict. After a brief moment of reflection, Vlada sleeps on a waiting area couch until he is awakened by an officer involved in the transport who instructs him to return the truck and clean the cargo hold.

Back home, Vlada reunites with his wife and teenage son Ivan, and the family discusses their uncertain future amid ongoing bombings. Vlada tries to bond with Ivan but finds a sense of emotional distance from his son. Sharing stories of how his father and uncle experienced the brutal impacts of World War II, Vlada attempts to forge a connection. Before leaving, he gives Ivan the cassette tape that Paja had given him, symbolizing hope and expression through music. The film closes with Ivan listening to the cassette with a friend, stating with determination, “I want to start a band.”, revealing a glimmer of hope for a new generation amid the scars of war.
