Spoilers ahead
The movie opens with Zoe Hughes, Rosamund Pike, peering through the bushes with an unreadable, almost haunted expression—a moment that hints at a mind both calculating and exhausted by a life lived in the glare of fame. A film crew nearby seems disgruntled by Zoe’s performance, their mood shifting abruptly when a surprise visit arrives from Zoe’s mother, Kathryn Vale, Lena Olin. The elder star, a legendary A-list actress with a fresh husband and a successful book to her name, looms large over the production and over Zoe’s own ambitions. Zoe longs to carve out a name beyond the shadow of Kathryn’s storied career, but the pressure of living up to a Hollywood-icon mother weighs heavily on every choice she makes.
