Miles Raymond, portrayed by Paul Giamatti, is a struggling writer and a passionate wine enthusiast, battling feelings of depression while working as a middle school English teacher in San Diego. As his friend and former college roommate, Jack Cole, played by Thomas Haden Church, prepares for his impending nuptials, Miles agrees to take him on a road trip through the picturesque wine country of Santa Ynez Valley. While Miles hopes to unwind and savor the good life, Jack is looking forward to one last fling before settling down.

During their adventure, the men meet Maya, a charming waitress at Miles’s favorite spot, The Hitching Post, enacted by Virginia Madsen, and her friend Stephanie, played by Sandra Oh, who works at a nearby winery. They decide to set up a double date without disclosing Jack’s engagement. While Jack engages in a romantic escapade with Stephanie, Miles finds himself drawn to Maya. However, during a moment of unguarded honesty, Miles inadvertently reveals Jack’s marital status to Maya. Upset by the betrayal, Maya ends her connection with Miles and informs Stephanie, resulting in an explosive confrontation where Stephanie breaks Jack’s nose using her motorcycle helmet.

As the weekend progresses, Miles receives disheartening news about yet another rejection of his manuscript, prompting him to act out at a wine tasting event. Meanwhile, Jack continues to create chaos by having a fling with another waitress named Cammi, leading to an awkward escape when her husband unexpectedly returns home, forcing Jack to flee in nothing but his bare essentials. To mask the truth behind Jack’s injuries, Miles finds himself in a predicament, ultimately crashing his own car into a ditch to fabricate an accident story for Jack’s fiancée.

At Jack’s wedding, Miles has a bittersweet encounter with his ex-wife Vicki, discovering that she has moved on and is expecting a baby with her new partner. This moment hits hard for Miles, illustrating the finality of his past as he sits alone, drinking his cherished 1961 Château Cheval Blanc wine from a disposable cup in a fast-food joint. Just when he thinks hope is lost, he receives a heartfelt message from Maya, expressing her enjoyment of his manuscript and inviting him for a visit. In a poignant ending, the film closes with Miles back in Santa Ynez, standing at Maya’s door, ready to embrace whatever comes next.
