What tragic event sets the story in motion?

Plot Summary

As Thien (actor name) mourns the untimely passing of his sister-in-law Teresa in a devastating motorcycle accident in Saigon, his young nephew Dao, just five years old, miraculously survives. Driven by a mix of grief and responsibility, Thien accompanies both Teresa’s lifeless body and Dao to the rural village where he spent his formative years. There, amidst the rustic charm of countryside life, a series of loosely connected events unfolds.

The somber tone is set with a funeral and subsequent Catholic rituals, as the community pays their respects to Teresa. Amidst this backdrop of mourning, Thien encounters an elderly veteran who shares haunting stories of survival during the Vietnam War, highlighting the stark contrasts between those who lived through the conflict and those who did not. As he navigates these poignant encounters, Thien also finds himself bonding with Dao over a shared hunting trip with their host, and awkwardly rekindling a connection with childhood friend-turned-nun, Thao.

As the days pass, Thien makes arrangements for Dao to attend school where his sister-in-law worked, surrounded by students from the highlands. However, instead of staying to witness the events that unfold, Thien decides to leave the village and embark on an aimless quest to locate his missing brother, driven perhaps by a desire to learn the truth about his sibling’s whereabouts and ultimately ensure Dao’s well-being. This search is marked by unexpected revelations: his brother had once considered a life in the priesthood before opting for marriage instead.

Thien’s journey takes him to a village where he hopes to find clues about his brother’s fate, poring over a wedding photograph of the two found on Teresa’s body and sharing stories with locals. Despite his tireless efforts, however, Thien is ultimately met with disappointment and silence, leaving him to confront the harsh realities of his own uncertainty and the mystery surrounding his brother’s disappearance.
