Long ago, a political decision forged between Arendelle and the Northuldra left a rift in the Enchanted Forest. King Runeard’s dam, built to secure influence, sparked a conflict that ended with Runeard’s death and unleashed deep resentment. The forest’s ancient spirits—earth, fire, water, and air—recoiled in response, dissipating their magic and shrouding the land in a heavy wall of mist. Escaping the danger, King Agnarr was helped by a mysterious savior, a moment that would haunt his family and shape the future of Arendelle.

Fast forward to a kingdom in autumn, where Elsa, Anna, Olaf the snowman, Kristoff, and Sven are enjoying a season of change and quiet leadership. A strange voice calls to Elsa in the night, drawing her toward the unknown. In her attempt to follow it, she unintentionally awakens the very forces she and her sister have learned to live with, and a sudden disturbance forces the people of Arendelle to flee their homes. The Rock Trolls return with Grand Pabbie, who urges the sisters to uncover the truth about the past in order to restore balance. Trusting the call, Elsa, Anna, Olaf, Kristoff, and Sven press onward toward the heart of the Enchanted Forest.

As the journey unfolds, the elements respond in dramatic ways. The mist parts at Elsa’s touch, the air swirls into a violent tornado that ensnares the travelers, and Elsa must transform the swirling vortex into ice sculptures that reveal glimpses of their father’s history. A friendly yet fiery creature—an agitated fire spirit in the form of a magical salamander—joins their quest, while the two sisters encounter both Northuldra and Arendelle soldiers still locked in conflict. A delicate peace begins to take shape when Anna and Elsa work to broker a truce, uncovering a revelation about their mother, Queen Iduna, who was Northuldran and once saved Arendelle as she sought to protect her family. The Northuldra speak of a fifth spirit—an ancient force meant to unite people with the magic of nature—and this idea becomes a beacon for what lies ahead.

With Kristoff and Sven staying with the Northuldra, Elsa and Anna, together with Olaf, venture farther north. They discover their parents’ wrecked ship and a map leading to Ahtohallan, a mythical river said to descend into the past. Elsa, believing she should push forward, leaves Anna and Olaf behind and sets out alone. Along the way, she encounters and tames the Nøkk, the water spirit that guards the way to the river. In these trials, Elsa learns that the voice guiding her is the memory of their mother, Iduna, and that Elsa’s powers are a gift from nature—an inheritance born from Iduna’s selfless act of saving Agnarr. Delving into the most dangerous region of Ahtohallan, Elsa unearths a truth that reframes the entire conflict: the dam was a calculated ruse to curb Northuldra’s connection to magic, and Runeard had initiated the hostilities by murdering the Northuldra leader.

Armed with this knowledge, Elsa relays the truth to Anna and then, moved by the weight of the revelation, freezes herself in order to protect what she has learned. Olaf suddenly fades from existence, a poignant reminder of the personal costs inflicted by the origins of the peril. Reconciled with the past, Anna resolves to end the cycle of violence: she awakens the earth spirit, Jötunn, and lures it toward the dam. The ensuing assault by the forest’s rock giants hurls enormous boulders into the structure, shattering the dam and unleashing a flood that rushes toward Arendelle. Elsa thaws, rides the Nøkk to the kingdom, and uses her powers to stop the rising tide, saving the town and its people from catastrophe. As the mist clears, Elsa reunites with Anna and even revives Olaf, while Kristoff honors Anna with a proposal.

The sisters come to understand their common bond as a bridge between people and the magical beings of the forest. Elsa embraces her role as the fifth spirit, serving as a guardian who maintains harmony between nature and humanity. With the forest’s magic restored, she steps back from the throne, abdicates in favor of Anna, and commits to traveling between Arendelle and the Enchanted Forest to preserve peace and continue the work of uniting both realms.

In a lighthearted post-credits moment, Olaf recounts the events to Marshmallow, the snow giant who guards Elsa’s ice palace, and to the tiny Snowgies—reminders that the magic of their world continues to exist even after triumphs are achieved. The story closes on a note of lasting balance and renewed kinship, with Anna ruling Arendelle and Elsa serving as its protector, ever moving between two worlds to keep the peace that binds them all.
