In Southampton, 1916, the HMHS Britannic — a sister ship to the Titanic — serves as a hospital vessel ferrying wounded Allied soldiers from the Gallipoli Campaign. Among the nurses aboard is Jacqueline Bisset as Lady Lewis, who travels toward Greece via Naples, where her husband has become Britain’s Ambassador. Traveling with her is Vera Campbell Amanda Ryan, her demanding governess who, haunted by the Titanic disaster four years earlier, faints during boarding and reveals to Captain Barrett John Rhys-Davies and First Officer Townsend Ben Daniels that she is a British Intelligence operative and that she suspects a German spy has sneaked aboard Britannic. Barrett is dismissive about a woman handling dangerous espionage work, while Townsend’s skepticism gradually gives way to a wary respect for Vera.

The German saboteur has indeed boarded Britannic, posing as Chaplain Reynolds [Edward Atterton], and soon learns that the ship secretly carries a large stock of small arms and munitions destined for Cairo. Under the Articles of War, Reynolds views his actions as legal and begins a campaign of sabotage designed to seize or sink the vessel. He also tries to whip up trouble among the Irish stokers, all members of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, sparking tension and the possibility of mutiny. Vera senses irregularities and odd behavior, but Captain Barrett remains unconvinced, though Townsend begins to show sympathy toward her resolve. The two drift closer as Vera privately admits her cover and the weight of being dismissed as a woman.

As Reynolds’s plans unfold, Vera and Reynolds find themselves drawn to each other, an uneasy romance forming amid danger. A mutiny erupts, but Vera acts decisively, killing one of the mutineers with the support of Britannic’s crew, foiling the revolt. The crew’s oath to protect Vera deepens, and Barrett breaks from his chauvinistic stance, treating her as an equal and earning her genuine respect. Townsend witnesses her courage and backs her, while Vera earns a standing ovation for her bravery. The ship then bears a heavy blow when the German U-boat is sunk by the battleship HMS Victoria during the torpedo run against Britannic.

Reynolds resolves to sink Britannic after the ship leaves Naples, and Vera’s world shifts again as she and Reynolds consummate their precarious closeness. She later uncovers his true identity as Ernst Tilbach, a revelation that alters every trust built on shared peril. The two race through the engine room as Reynolds tears open a hole in the Britannic’s bow, and the vessel staggers toward Kea. The ship’s desperate beaching operation accelerates flooding, forcing Vera to confront the reality of impending catastrophe. She discovers that William, Lady Lewis’s child, has vanished, and Ernst helps her guide him to a lifeboat before it’s lowered.

Another explosion strands Ernst, leaving him trapped in a flooded compartment. Vera navigates the wreck with him, moving through flooded rooms, vents, and corridors, eventually reaching the outside by swimming through a porthole and climbing into an empty lifeboat still tethered to the davits. As disaster compounds, a lifeboat crowded with people is drawn into Britannic’s spinning propellers and ripped apart; Ernst ties Vera to a line and, despite her pleas, sacrifices their chance of survival by pushing her clear and kissing her goodbye before she’s dragged away. He stays aboard as the lifeboat is torn apart by the blades, his fate sealed in an act of ultimate sacrifice. The Britannic capsizes and sinks beneath the waves, while Vera is left to endure the aftermath until HMS Victoria arrives to rescue the survivors, with Townsend offering quiet comfort as the search for remaining crew members continues.

The tale blends tension, loyalty, and heart-stopping peril aboard a ship that becomes a floating arena of courage, deception, and sacrifice, all framed by the stark realities of war and the quiet courage of those who endure it.
