- Jake Sully is a Marine who becomes paralyzed during combat. His twin brother, Tommy, had spent three years training to control an Avatar— a hybrid of human and Na’vi DNA— on Pandora, a distant planet that humans have invaded to extract a valuable mineral called Unobtainium. When Tommy tragically dies, Jake is recruited to take his place and control his Avatar. Transported to Pandora via a cryo-chamber, Jake must wear an oxygen mask upon arrival because the planet’s atmosphere is unsuitable for humans.
