Vivian Hsu

Vivian Hsu, known in Mandarin as 徐若瑄 and in Atayal as Bidai Syulan, is a multifaceted Taiwanese entertainer whose career spans over three decades, encompassing acting, modeling, singing, and lyricism. Born Hsu Su‑chuan on 1975‑03‑19 in Taichung, Taiwan, she grew up as the second of three children in a mixed Hakka and Tayal household, a background that later influenced her artistic versatility. Her public debut came at age fifteen when she won first place in a talent contest hosted by CTS in 1990, leading to her membership in the pop trio Girls' Team and the release of two early albums before the group disbanded in 1993. Transitioning to modeling, Hsu posed for the celebrated photobooks Angel and Venus, and later appeared on high‑profile magazine covers, cementing her status as a fashion icon in both Taiwan and Japan. In 1997 she entered the Japanese entertainment scene, joining the novelty band Black Biscuits, whose catchy singles and appearance on the prestigious NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen in 1998 broadened her fanbase across East Asia. Parallel to her music ventures, Hsu launched a successful acting career, starring in the comedic hit Shaolin Popey (1994), the ambitious co‑production The Knot (2006), and Jackie Chan’s The Accidental Spy (2001), while also providing voice work for the anime Gundam SEED. Since 2003 she has focused her activities primarily in Greater China, delivering memorable performances in television dramas such as Love Storm and contributing original theme songs, showcasing her dual talent as a vocalist and lyricist. Beyond the screen, she has authored several autobiographical photobooks and remained a sought‑after commercial spokesperson, representing brands like Slim Beauty House and Kao Essential. Her personal life garnered public interest when she married Singaporean businessman Sean Lee in 2014, gave birth to her son Dalton in 2015, and announced their divorce in December 2023, marking the end of a high‑profile partnership. Throughout her enduring career, Hsu has consistently blended artistic expression with commercial appeal, making her a celebrated figure in Asian popular culture.
