Hugh Emrys Griffith was a highly regarded Welsh actor, recognized as a 'wild-eyed, formidable character player' by BFI Screenonline. He was involved in over 100 theatre, film, and television productions throughout his 40-year career. Remarkably, he was the second Welsh-born actor to win an Academy Award, securing a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in 'Ben-Hur' in 1959, as well as scoring a nomination for 'Tom Jones' in 1963. Beyond his film career, Griffith was also an acclaimed stage actor, recognized for his renowned Shakespearean performances as part of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Furthermore, he was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for the original production ‘Look Homeward, Angel.’ Among other accolades, he was a BAFTA Award and a three-time Golden Globe nominee for Best Supporting Actor and a Clarence Derwent Award winner.
