Guy Doleman

Guy Doleman (born 22 November 1923 in Hamilton, Waikato, New Zealand) was a versatile actor whose career spanned four continents and three decades, making a lasting impression on stage, radio, and screen. Early in his life he relocated to Australia, where he quickly became one of the busiest performers of the 1940s and 1950s, starring in numerous Australian films such as The Phantom Stockman and earning a reputation as a radio star through popular dramas like Hagen's Circus. In 1952 he won a £300 Actor's Choice Award for his performance in the radio drama The Coward, a prize he used to travel to Hollywood in September 1953 where he auditioned for several productions. Although he turned down the role of Long John Silver because it required contact lenses, his determination led him to secure supporting parts in Hollywood features, including an uncredited detective in Dial M for Murder (1954) and the memorable Lt. Cmdr. Farrel in On the Beach (1959). By the early 1960s Doleman had settled in London, where his crisp diction and commanding presence landed him the role of Count Lippe in the James Bond film Thunderball (1965) and the recurring character Colonel Ross in the Harry Palmer series (The Ipcress File, Funeral in Berlin, Billion Dollar Brain). Perhaps his most iconic television moment came in 1967 when he portrayed the first Number Two in the cult classic The Prisoner, delivering a performance that combined menace with subtle irony. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s he continued to appear in American TV series such as The Six Million Dollar Man and Murder, She Wrote, demonstrating a remarkable ability to adapt to genre shifts. Doleman's career concluded with a final television appearance in 1992, and he passed away from lung cancer on 30 January 1996 in Los Angeles, leaving behind a rich legacy that reflects the golden age of radio, classic British espionage cinema, and enduring cult television.
