His breakthrough came with the role of Sergeant Charles Bishop in the 1982 comedy Privates on Parade, followed by notable television appearances in Juliet Bravo, Crown Court, and the titular role in Call Me Mister. Bamber's skillful portrayal of Mr. Collins in the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and his compelling turn as Julian Whitaker in The New Statesman showcased his talent for both drama and comedy. In the mid‑1990s he earned the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor for his performance as Guy in My Night with Reg, a role he later reprised for television, cementing his reputation as a leading stage actor.

Beyond the UK, Bamber gained international recognition as Marcus Tullius Cicero in HBO/BBC2's epic series Rome (2005‑2007) and as Adolf Hitler in Bryan Singer’s Valkyrie (2008).
