Christopher John Carpenter, better known as Chris Carpenter, (born April 27, 1975) is a retired professional baseball player who spent the majority of his 15 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals and Toronto Blue Jays. Carpenter played an instrumental role in the Cardinals' 2006 and 2011 World Series championships. Known for his intense competitive nature, Carpenter was most recognized for his exceptional sinker and imposing curveball which helped him win the Cy Young Award in 2005, a rare honor for a pitcher. His career was repeatedly marred by injuries; nevertheless, he consistently exhibited resiliency by returning to pitch effectively at the highest professional level after multiple rehabilitation stints. Off the field, Carpenter is known for his philanthropy and tenacious work ethic. He announced his retirement on November 20, 2013. On April 29, 2016, the Cardinals announced his inductions into the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame in August the same year.
