What's After the Movie
Anna Wing was a distinguished British actress whose career spanned over seven decades, beginning in the late 1930s and continuing almost until her death in 2013. Born on 30 October 1914 in Hackney, London, she first worked as an artist’s model before serving in East End hospitals during World War II, experiences that later informed her empathetic portrayals on screen. After studying at the Croydon School of Acting, she entered the London repertory theatre circuit, performing for more than 65 years and even taking the stage at Canada’s renowned Stratford Festival in 1967. Wing’s early television work included roles in series such as Market in Honey Lane and a memorable appearance in the Doctor Who serial “Kinda” (1982), while her film credits ranged from Billy Liar (1963) to the horror cult classic Xtro (1983).
The role that cemented her legacy was that of matriarch Lou Beale in the BBC soap EastEnders, a character she originated when the show launched in February 1985. Wing’s portrayal of the Beale family’s steadfast grandmother earned her a place in British television history until the character’s dramatic death in July 1988, a decision she later regretted. Nevertheless, she remained active, taking on stage parts like Madame Arcati in Blithe Spirit and appearing in later TV series including Casualty, The Bill, and French and Saunders. Even in her nineties, Wing continued to work, starring in short films such as Ex Memoria (2005) and Numbers Up (2009), and appearing in a music video at age 94. Her contributions were recognized with an MBE in 2009 for services to drama and charity. A lifelong Quaker and peace activist, she passed away on 7 July 2013 at the age of 98, leaving behind a rich legacy of talent and humanitarian commitment.
