Ann Morriss

Ann Morriss was an American actress whose career spanned the golden age of Hollywood, beginning in the late 1930s and extending through the early 1960s with over two decades of work in film and television. Born on August 5, 1919, in Tampa, Florida, she entered the film industry during a particularly vibrant era of studio production, signing with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) where she became part of the studio's prestigious stable of contract players. Her personal life became deeply intertwined with the industry when she married film director Edwin L. Marin in December 1940, a union that lasted until his untimely death in 1951 and produced three children: Denis Anthony, Reese Andrew, and Randi Alexandra, with whom she survived her husband. During her time at MGM, Morriss appeared in numerous high-profile productions, working alongside major stars of the period and establishing herself as a reliable supporting actress capable of handling both dramatic and light comedic roles with equal finesse.

Morriss's extensive filmography includes significant appearances in classic films such as The Women (1939), where she played an Exercise Instructress in an all-star female ensemble cast, and Broadway Melody of 1940, showcasing her versatility within the rigid studio system. Her early career featured memorable roles in The Chaser (1938), Honolulu (1939) alongside George Raft, Society Lawyer (1939), and The Hardys Ride High (1939) with Mickey Rooney in the beloved Andy Hardy series. She also appeared in the crime short Think First (1939) and the romance And One Was Beautiful (1940), proving her ability to navigate various genres during the height of the studio era. As the entertainment industry evolved toward the small screen, she successfully transitioned to television, appearing in popular series such as The Public Defender (1954–1955) in multiple episodes, The Donna Reed Show (1959–1960), Whirlybirds (1958), and Colt .45 (1959), demonstrating her remarkable adaptability to the changing landscape of American entertainment. Her final film role came in the Western One Foot in Hell (1960), while her last television appearance was in Lock-Up (1960), after which she retired from the industry. Following her departure from acting, Morriss lived a relatively private life in Washington State until her death on June 30, 1994, in Bellevue, where she was laid to rest at Sunset Hills Memorial Park.
